It's tough to pick a
favorite this week as the major releases offer something for just about everyone
this week with
Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay for comedy,
drama abounds in the surprisingly good Never
Back Down , and of course what ends up being our pick, the
better than it sounds Doomsday.
Release
Date: July 29, 2008 Studio: Universal Pictures Director: Neil Marshall Screenwriter: Neil Marshall Starring: Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins, Adrian Lester, Alexander Siddig,
Malcolm McDowell Genre: Action, Thriller MPAA Rating: R (for strong bloody violence, language and some sexual
content/nudity)
Plot Summary: In the action-packed new thriller from writer/director Neil
Marshall ("The Descent"), authorities brutally quarantine a country as it
succumbs to fear and chaos when a virus strikes. The literal walling-off works
for three decades – until the dreaded Reaper virus violently resurfaces in a
major city. An elite group of specialists, captained by Eden Sinclair (Rhona
Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a
cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must
battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare
Review: A very good debut with Dog Soldiers,
then the even better second film The Descent, and now the cherry on top
called Doomsday. I just got back from seeing this film and it was a wild
and crazy ride from start to finish. Sure it borrows quite a bit from
Escape from New York and Road Warrior, but it is still unique enough to
seperate itself from those movies. Rhona Mitra makes one sexy, tough and
believable action chick. I didn't know if she could pull this kind of
role off, but it worked for me.
Doomsday isn't going to win any awards and it's not better than The
Descent, but if you like your movies with plenty of action and gore,
check it out and prepare to have a blast.
Release Date: July 29, 2008 Studio: New Line Cinema Director: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg Screenwriter: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg Starring: John Cho, Kal Penn, Rob Corddry, Roger Bart, Neil Patrick
Harris Genre: Adventure, Comedy MPAA Rating: R (for strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity,
pervasive language and drug use)
Plot Summary: "Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo" marks the
triumphant return of these two hilarious, slacker anti-heroes. The movie stars
John Cho as Harold and Kal Penn as Kumar, two stoners who can't seem to get a
break. Their last adventure found them traveling across country to find a White
Castle hamburger in order to satisfy a weed-induced case of "the munchies."
This time, the boys get themselves in trouble trying to sneak a bong onboard a
flight to Amsterdam. Now, being suspected of terrorism, they are forced to run
from the law and try to find a way to prove their innocence. What follows is an
irreverent and epic journey of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling and a wild trip
around the world that is as "un-PC" as it gets.
John Cho, Kal Penn, Rob Corddry,
Roger Bart, Neil Patrick Harris. Single disc with rated and unrated
features; two-disc set with rated and unrated feature plus extras.
Extras: Commentary, "The World of Harold and Kumar"
featurette, additional scenes, interactive function that uses new and
alternate scenes to change the course of the film's action
Review:
HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE...is a very funny movie, and I
laughed a great deal. That's a good thing.
It's also sloppy, careless and goes for too many obvious or clichéd
jokes. That's a shame.
It's too bad, because what we have in these two guys is a wonderful
blend of what's best and worst about young Americans. They are smart.
They are multi-ethnic. In general, they are good-hearted and appreciate
the chance to live in America. They're also lazy, self-indulgent and far
too easily distracted by drugs. This makes their movies ripe for social
commentary...more
Release Date: July 29, 2008 Studio: Summit Entertainment Director: Jeff Wadlow Screenwriter: Chris Hauty Starring: Sean Faris, Djimon Hounsou, Cam Gigandet, Amber Heard, Evan
Peters, Wyatt Smith Genre: Action, Drama, Sports MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for mature thematic material involving intense
sequences of fighting/violence, some sexuality, partying and language - all
involving teens)
Plot Summary:
Set against the action-packed world of Mixed Martial
Arts, "Never Back Down" is the story of Jake Tyler, a tough kid who leads with
his fists, and, often, with his heart. Jake Tyler, played by Sean Faris, is the
new kid in town with a troubled past. He has recently moved to Orlando, Florida
with his family who has relocated to support his younger brother's shot at a
professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team at
home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick
tempered brawler.
Making an attempt to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja
(Amber Heard) Jake goes to a party where he is unwittingly pulled into a fight
with a bully named Ryan McCarthy (Cam Gigandet). While he is defeated and
humiliated in the fight, a classmate introduces himself to Jake and tells him
about the sport known as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He sees a star in Jake and
asks that he meet with his mentor, Jean Roqua, played by Djimon Hounsou ("Blood
Diamond," "In America").
It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting, but rather
an art form he wants to master. Roqua will take Jake under his wing, but it is
up to Jake to find the patience, discipline, willingness and reason within him
to succeed. For Jake, there is much more at stake than mere victory. His
decision will not just settle a score; it will define who he is
Extras:
Deleted scenes, director and cast commentary. Special edition adds
extended version of the film, "Blow by Blow: Breaking Down the Fights
With the Director and MMA Fight Experts," "Mixing It Up: Bringing MMA to
the Big Screen," training webisodes. (Summit
Entertainment).
Review: This is one of the most masculine-positive
films I have ever seen in my entire life! Sure there's a lot of sweat
and hot muscle everywhere you look! But that takes a big back seat to
genuine character development - with the primary focus being on the
muscle on the left side of your chest (Your Heart)! What an incredibly
intelligent story! If only Hollywood could have the courage to do this
more often - A "Fight Club" type movie with zero, I repeat, zero
exploitation or gore! This rare, one-of-kind movie is even suitable for
older children to watch! It is so sophisticated, in fact, I would even
recommend it as an excellent resource for Anger Management classes!...more
