Review: For those who found 2004's Aliens vs. Predator
too lightweight in the gore-and-guns department, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
offers a marked improvement in both categories, as well as a respectable amount
of rumbles between the title extraterrestrials. Set in the 21st century (which
predates the story to all of the Alien features), Requiem sends a
crippled Predator ship crashing to Earth in a small Colorado town; unbeknownst
to the locals, the craft is loaded with H.R. Giger's insectoid monsters, which
make quick work of most of the population. As the human cast is slowly whittled
to a few hardy (if unmemorable) souls, a Predator warrior also arrives to
complicate matters and do battle with the Aliens, as well as a ferocious
alien-Predator hybrid (dubbed a Predalien by the sci-fi and horror press).
Visual-effects designers and music-video helmers The Strause Brothers (who make
their feature directorial debut here) keep the action on frantic throughout...more
Extras: Single discs: Commentary by
directors Colin and Greg Strause and producer John Davis, commentary by
creature effects designers/creators Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis.
Extreme unrated adds 10 minutes of never-before-seen gruesome footage;
five behind-the-scene featurettes: "Prepare for War: The Making of AVP-R,"
"Fight to the Finish: The Making of AVP-R," "AVP-R: The Nightmare
Returns -- Creating the Aliens," "Crossbreed: The PredAlien" and
"Building the Predator Homeworld"; still design galleries. (Fox).

EN 5 Second Review:
It's a Predator and an Aliens movie, of course it is
bad, and of course we will be going to see it anyway.
Review by Peter Veugelaers, EntertainmentNutz.com
Famous American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft
said fear of the unknown is the oldest and strongest of the fears and
maintained its truth. In Alien and Predator movies the
fear wasn’t as politicised as it is here. In AVPR, foreign
invaders causes the U.S. military to fight back all the while innocent
Americans are dying, symbolically gestured through the mayhem which
ensues between alien and predator in which humans are caught in the
middle. Go figure. Sounds like what Michael Moore and a list of other
anti-military involvement in Iraq filmmakers have been saying since
2003. Fear of the unknown as in American foreign policies? Anti-war
movies abound, but in an Alien and Predator franchise?
Could we be more subtle? I found this lacked suspense and scares. It
works better at suspense in the murder-mystery mode at the start but
when the culprits are exposed it’s a full-on gore fest, which isn’t that
scary but kind of perverse, which works better in favour of the movie’s
anti-war message. A cohesively crafted message it sends but nothing much
else.
