Review: Despite a few changes and rearrangements, the overall plot of
the movie is remarkably faithful to its source material, the first installment
of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. It doesn't finish the
book, however, and--much like The Fellowship of the Ring did--leaves the
viewer hanging in anticipation of the next film, The Subtle Knife, due in
2009. So even though The Golden Compass is impressive--especially with
its spot-on cast and terrific visual effects...more

Plot Summary: Based on author Philip Pullman's bestselling and
award-winning novel, "The Golden Compass" tells the first story in Pullman's
"His Dark Materials" trilogy. "The Golden Compass" is an exciting fantasy
adventure, set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves
as animals, talking bears fight wars, and Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the
center of the story is Lyra (played by newcomer Dakota Blue Richards), a
12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a friend who's been kidnapped
by a mysterious organization known as the Gobblers - and winds up on an epic
quest to save not only her world, but ours as well. "The Golden Compass" stars
an ensemble cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, and Ian
McShane. The film is written and directed by Chris Weitz ("About A Boy," "Antz")
and produced by Deborah Forte and Bill Carraro ("Frequency"). It is executive
produced by Andrew Miano and Paul Weitz ("In Good Company"). "The Golden
Compass" is scheduled for a Dec. 7, 2007 release
EN 5 Second Review:
A great fun family movie with some flaws, but overall
very enjoyable.
With
all its hesitations and half-measures, The Golden Compass
kindled something this critic hasn't felt in years: a burning thirst to
see the sequel Ty Burr: Boston Globe
In the alternative Earth of "The Golden Compass," every
human is born with a "daemon," a shape-shifting animal companion that's
a cross between a witch's familiar, a Beanie Bear, and an outward
manifestation of the soul. This is a rich concept, if fairly nuts, and
for an author like Philip Pullman, on whose 1995 novel the movie is
based, it's an excuse for grand adventures in metaphysics. For a
Hollywood filmmaker like Chris Weitz, it's merely the occasion for
computer animation above and beyond the call of duty...more
The
movie simply delivers too many colorfuls for its own good,
none of whom establish a true emotional identity, and thus
it isn't moving, it's busy Stephen Hunter: Washington Post
There's nothing wrong with "The Golden Compass" that Sister
Ignatius couldn't fix with a few smart knuckle raps from her
ever-trusty ruler. Like an errant child, the movie doesn't
pay attention, doesn't do its homework and talks in class...more
