Plot Summary: Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a
washed-up 80s pop star who's been reduced to working the nostalgia circuit at
county fairs and amusement parks. The charismatic and talented musician gets a
chance at a comeback when reigning diva Cora Corman invites him to write and
record a duet with her, but there's a problem—Alex hasn't written a song in
years, he's never written lyrics, and he has to come up with a hit in a matter
of days. Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), Alex's beguilingly quirky plant
lady, whose flair for words strikes a chord with the struggling songwriter. On
the rebound from a bad relationship, Sophie is reluctant to collaborate with
anyone, especially commitment-phobe Alex. As their chemistry heats up at the
piano and under it, Alex and Sophie will have to face their fears—and the
music—if they want to find the love and success they both deserve. The film
co-stars Brad Garrett as Alex's steadfast manager, Kristen Johnston as Sophie's
sister, Rhonda, and Campbell Scott as Sophie's novelist ex-boyfriend. Newcomer
Haley Bennett plays young, pop princess Cora Corman
EN 5 Second Review:
The Date movie for this valentine's day. Every year has

but it's Barrymore's performance that is the true revelation. This isn't
hyperbole. The actress refuses to reduce Sophie to a needy or crazy
mess, the only two options given to actresses in Hollywood films of this

"Music
and Lyrics never really finds its tone." Anna Smith: Empire Reviews
Fans of Barrymore and Grant are likely to enjoy their
pleasing ramblings, and the modern-day, down-to-earth
courtship is handled well. But this is unlikely to go down
as either actor’s finest hour — or that of director Marc
Lawrence, who found a better match for Grant in Two Weeks

Music
and Lyrics turns out to be a better than average
romantic comedy James Berardenelli: Reelviews
This film's "reality" is closer to ours than the one
presented by many similar movies. Music and Lyrics is
frequently appealing, often witty, and occasionally funny,
but it's not going to convert skeptics and cynics into
sentimentalists. The movie fails to achieve a position in
the top echelon of romantic comedies, but it resides high
enough in the pecking order to be worth a look by anyone
with a penchant for the genre...more
