Preview: One of the
first films to examine the aftermath of post- 9/11 New York City, Reign Over
Me shows how much even indirect contact with those who lost loved ones in
the tragedy can greatly affect. Like rings of debris spiraling out from an
explosion, Charlie Fineman's (Adam Sandler) loss also devastates his in-laws,
who he refuses to speak to, and ex-college roommate, Alan Johnson...more
Review: I saw this at
the theaters and it totally blew me away. First off, while the movie has it's
funny moments between Sandler and Cheadle, it is NOT, I repeat, NOT a comedy.
Don't expect Happy Gilmore/Billy Madison from Sandler in this as his character
is a very troubled widower who deals with his loss in his own eccentric ways...more
Extras: "Behind The
Reign" making-of featurette,
extended Jam Session with
Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle,
photo montage.

Plot Summary: In Columbia Pictures' new drama
"Reign Over Me," two former college roommates Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) and
Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) run into each other years later and rekindle their
friendship. Charlie, who recently lost his wife and children, has retreated from

both of whom are in need of a trusted friend at this pivotal moment in their
lives. "Reign Over Me" was written and directed by Mike Binder ("The Upside of
Anger").
EN 5 Second Review:
Adam Sandler has turned into quite a fine actor at
times. This is a movie that anyone who was affected by the events of
9/11, or has ever suffered a great loss should see. That is to say, everyone.
Adam
Sandler and Don Cheadle head a strong cast in this affecting drama of
friendship and regeneration Joe Layden: Variety
Sandler (never making a false step while maneuvering though
vertiginous mood swings) and Cheadle (deftly commingling instinctive
decency with quiet desperation) are individually excellent, and bring
out the best in each other. And the pic itself transcends its real but
relatively minor flaws to score a satisfyingly potent impact...more
You
certainly have to appreciate that Sandler wants to stretch
in such a fashion, but you also want material that allows
him to do so more convincingly Christy Lemire: AP Writer-director Mike
Binder reveals a more accurately neighborhoody view of New
York than we ordinarily see in films. He also refrains from
politicizing or banging us over the head with the
significance of Sept. 11 on a citywide or nationwide scale;
it's implicit. By focusing on one man's loss, "Reign Over
Me" feels more powerfully personal...more
The
unlikely alliance at the center of it all is dark, edgy and
saturated with history and sentiment Jeanne Aufmuth: Palo Alto Weekly
Binder is one of those rare writer/directors who stands in
the eye of the storm; he understands human frailty and can
shrewdly alter a mood with a simple word or glance. “Reign”
is blessed with such subtly, particularly in the profound
performances of Cheadle and Sandler, the latter of whom is
more dramatically gifted than his Happy Gilmore public
persona allows...more
