Review:
It's riddled with masculine
clichés and by-the-numbers
testosterone-driven plot
elements, but "Shooter" is
no reason for Mark Wahlberg
to turn the gun on himself.
On the heels of his
Oscar-nominated work in "The
Departed," he leads the way
in this action-packed
roller-coaster romp of
mayhem, suspense and, of
course, machine guns...more

EN 5 Second Review:
Our kind of movie. Wahlberg is hot as usual, and so is
the action.
Not
my ideal action flick. But there’s a car chase at the start and
explosions at the end. Peter Veugelaers:
EntertainmentNutz.com The opening notes of music by Mark Mancina
with the swooping camera draws you into Shooter. Focus on two
American assassins in Ethiopia. Start the wooden dialogue which marks
most of the movie...
Even
in a climate where the pervasive influence of 24 can be argued to
have caused 'thriller fatigue,' Shooter is worth the price of admission James Berardinelli: Reelviews
We live in a world in which conspiracy theories abound, so
it comes as no surprise that many thrillers incorporate governmental
backstabbing, double-dealing, and cover-ups into the fabric of their
story. In a time when paranoia and distrust of the government have
become second nature, a movie like Shooter strikes a responsive
chord....more
Swagger,
after all, has undergone the most intensive training known
to man: He's watched "First Blood" every day for 14 years Phil Villarreal: Arizona Daily
Star
Wahlberg is fun to watch, but the problem is the script only
has about an hour's worth of material for him. About halfway
through, the filmmakers turn on Swagger the way the U.S.
government did. Based on the novel "Point of Impact" by
Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post film critic Stephen
Hunter, the film has more twists than Chubby Checker and
gets so ludicrous that at one point Swagger is meeting a
U.S. senator on a snowy mountaintop trying to exchange an
audiotape for Swagger's hot hostage love interest (Kate
Mara). And things only get more ridiculous and less coherent
from there...more

Wahlberg turns a hackneyed action-adventure into a
stand-up-and-take-notice thriller Jeanne Aufmuth: Palo Alto Times
Paranoia, betrayal, double-crosses and huge dollops of
testosterone all accounted for as Swagger takes one for the
team and still manages to elude the competition. Multiple
climaxes finally settle on a way to end the damn thing and
not a moment too soon. Bottom line the bad guys are bad and
the guns are smokin’ hot; hey, that’s why they call it a
thriller!...more
