Spider Man

Review By Peter Veugelaers

- Words escape me ... ecstasy

"Spider-Man" sounds like the old "loser finds his place in the world scenario", played out in Jim Carey comedies and in nerd flicks.

Peter Parker (aka Spiderman) is picked on and can’t sweep the girl of his dreams off her feet (Kirsten Dunst). While at school a laboratory spider, genetically enhanced, accidentally bites Peter and he metamorphosises into the legendary super hero and fights off the evil of the city and gets the girl....more

Peter Parker is your average teenager, until he's bitten by a genetically altered spider while on a field trip. He develops arachnid-like traits, including superhuman strength, webs that shoot from his wrists and a "spider sense" that warns him when danger is near. These new powers are put to the test when his best friend's father turns into the Green Goblin and tries to kill him.

Forty years after his comic-book debut, the web-slinger finally swings into theaters in this big-budget adventure from director Sam Raimi. Will the movie live up to fan expectation and hype? With a cast this talented (and photogenic), "Spider-Man" should catch moviegoers like flies in a web.

11 Web Slinging Tidbits

Spidey's high-tech duds cost
more than anything by Armani..

Ever since the web-slinger made his comic-book debut in 1962, Hollywood's been trying to make a movie about him. But bringing the beloved character to the big screen required superhero-like effort. Here are 11 behind-the-scenes tidbits to share while you're waiting in line.

  • For nearly a decade, "Titanic" director James Cameron tried to make his own version of "Spider-Man" featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as villain Doctor Octopus. Thanks to miles of legal red tape, it never took flight.

  • In the original "Spider-Man" comic, Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider. For the film, the arachnid is genetically engineered.

  • Similarly, the comic-book character created web-shooters that shot a synthetic web. In the film, Peter gains the ability to organically shoot webs from his wrists.

  • Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and director Sam Raimi have already signed on for a sequel, due in 2004.

  • Look for cameos from "Spider-Man" creator Stan Lee, "Evil Dead" star Bruce Campbell--as a wrestling announcer--and director Sam Raimi's brother, Ted.

  • Many actors were rumored to be vying for the coveted wall-crawling role, including Heath Ledger, Chris O'Donnell, Jude Law and Freddy Prinze Jr. But when Sam Raimi saw Maguire in "The Cider House Rules," he knew he'd found his Spider-Man.

  • To convince Sony Pictures that Tobey Maguire was right for the part, Raimi filmed a fully produced sequence that also featured Eliza Dushku (who co-starred with Kirsten Dunst in "Bring it On").

  • Four of the $100,000 Spider-Man costumes disappeared from the set during production, but it wasn't too big a problem--they made 23 total.

  • Though the scenes of the World Trade Center were pulled from the movie's trailer after the Sept. 11 attacks, the buildings remain in the finished version of the film.

  • Composer Danny Elfman has worked on three previous Raimi films--"A Simple Plan," "Army of Darkness" and "Darkman." He also had a cameo in "The Gift."

  • John Malkovich was originally attached to play the Green Goblin, but chose to star in "Ripley's Game" instead.
