Review: I will get it out of the way and say that this
was not and was not meant to be a historically accurate depiction of Ancient
Greece. It was never meant to be even when it was still just an Eisner-Award
winning graphic novel from the mind of iconic graphic novelist and artist Frank
Miller. With that out of the way I was able to watch and enjoy Zack Snyder's
film adaptation on its own terms without the criticism of historical accuracies
looming dangerously over my head. 300 deserves the label of being the first
event film of 2007. From start to finish, Snyder's film practically screams
blockbuster and popcorn and I wouldn't have it any other way...more

Plot Summary: Based on the epic graphic novel
by Frank Miller, "300" is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of
Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to
the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable
odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their
Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings
Miller's (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action
with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient
historic tale.
EN 5 Second Review:
Another classic Frank Miller graphic novel made into a
movie. We loved Sin City, and we love this movie.
300
is about as subtle as a spear through the head. But it's also
shamelessly entertaining. Chris Vognar: Dallas Morning News 300, the blood-spattering, sword-and-sandals yarn
based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, can be simplistic and excessive.
But by the time I felt the need to check the time, it was almost over.
Which means it's definitely not boring...more
300
certainly has its share of the latest toys, but they make
for a better coming-attractions trailer than a full-length
theatrical film Kenneth Turran: LA Times
Once the armies lock horns, the only way "300" can
maintain interest is by throwing a wild variety of
combatants at the noble Spartans. While Queen Gorgo has to
deal with a fifth column back home, her husband takes on a
giant with awful teeth (apparently only the Greeks could
afford orthodontia), hooded men who throw stink bombs, even
what might be the world's first armored rhinoceros. Snyder's
"300" certainly has its share of the latest toys, but they
make for a better coming-attractions trailer than a
full-length theatrical film....more
Wholesale
human slaughter never looked so pretty as in this heavily
stylized rendering of the battle of Thermopylae in ancient
Greece Gianni Truzzi: Seattle Post
Intelligencer
Under roiling skies, a small band of gruff, buff and
bloodthirsty Spartans boost their spears through opposing
chests with balletic grace, hack limbs into time-shifted
crimson spray, and hurl the limitless Persian corpses to
build a grisly wall of defense. Astonishingly, all of this
is accomplished in sandals and Speedos...more
Guys
of all ages and sexes won't be able to resist it. Peter Travers:
Rolling Stone The ads tell you to "prepare
for glory" as 300 Spartans go to war against an army of
Persians, numbering 250,000, in the film version of Frank
Miller's graphic novel about the 480 B.C. Battle of
Thermopylae. My advice is to prepare your eyes for popping
-- hell, they just might fly out of their sockets -- in the
face of such turbocharged visuals...more
