The Audio Nut
June 20th,
2005
Greetings again music nutz
and welcome to the midway point of 2005. The music page has had a pretty good
year so far in my opinion and due to the increased volume of readers and
participants the page will be done every week. In order for this to work I have
trimmed the page down just a bit, but overall there will be more bands, more
interviews and more music for all of us to enjoy. I hope you like.
Remember all comments and questions are always welcome.

Message Board: I have been encouraging
bands to post information about themselves on the
message board. Please check
it out and also post anything on there if you wish. You don’t have to be in a band
to post something. You can be a fan of a band or just post anything on there musically
related.

Foo
Fighters
In Your Honor
2005 RCA
Grade: B+
http://www.foofighters.com
There have not been
many rock bands that have successfully put out double release studio
albums and lived to tell about it. If history serves us correct then the
Foo Fighters are going to disappear in the next couple years.
Guns N' Roses and
Smashing Pumpkins
both put out double disc
sets right before their demise despite having a huge fan base worldwide.
The exception with the Foo Fighters might be that the front man Dave
Grohl actually calls most of the shots here since it’s ‘his’ band. So if
the group happens to fall apart I’m sure he can re-tool and move on.
Grohl and company have done what many bands do after hitting the decade
in existence mark, expand their music and strip down the songs at the
same time. In Your Honor is chalked full of arena rock anthems
and catchy radio tunes. The first disc contains all the buoyant rock
songs that display the groups’ commercial appeal, while the second disc
is the acoustic laden let’s sip coffee and just chill effort; which
seems added to help expand the bands record sales and support even more.
Foo Fighter fans will enjoy In Your Honor and friends whom one
may like softer music while the other enjoys harder stuff could go in
half on the price while both get a new CD out of the deal.

Coldplay
X&Y
2005 Capitol Records
Grade: C+
http://www.coldplay.com
So, is X&Y
supposed to be the sequel to the hugely successful A Rush of Blood to the Head ?
I can understand sticking to a formula that works, but this release
seems like an exact replica of its predecessor. This is the album
that’s supposed to separate Coldplay from the
U2 and
Radiohead comparisons, but it falls short in its efforts. I keep
hearing how the band seems so hell-bent on not being compared to those
two bands; yet all I really hear on this disc is the heavy influence
that those said bands have on the members of Coldplay. The musicianship
and songwriting ability does set the band apart from other bands using
this sound these days like The Perishers or The Dead 60’s , but
basically this is just another British pop album to me. I can’t find
anything outstanding or magnificent about X&Y. If you’d like to hear
what Radiohead would sound like with a more positive attitude and
listener friendly songwriting structure or what U2 might do to take a
step back then buy this CD. Otherwise stick to the originators and
forget the imitators. |

Black Eyed Peas
Monkey Business
2005 A&M Records
Grade: B
http://www.blackeyedpeas.com
The Black Eyed
Peas are back and continue to push the hip-hop envelope with their wide
ranch of styles and influences on Monkey Business. Sporting an
all-star lineup of guest appearances, which consist of
James Brown
,
Sting
,
Jack Johnson
and
Justin Timberlake
the Peas are all over the musical map here. Some parts are a little
cliché; “My Style” is very reminiscent of the rapping approach of
Ol Dirty Bastard while others like “Gone Going” featuring Johnson
seem new and refreshing. Most of the CD is undeniably the Black Eyed
Peas and their fashion of rap-hop music. Overall it is a good follow up
to
Elephunk. |

Shakira
Fijacion Oral
2005 Sony
Grade: B+
http://www.shakira.com
The English
version of this release isn’t due out until late 2005, but Fijacion
Oral is worth hearing now. Shakira gained huge notice in 2001 when
she released her English singing debut
Laundry Service.
America had finally gotten a glimpse of one of South Americas’ biggest
stars. The Spanish version of Laundry Service;
Donde Estan Los Ladrones
had been out for a couple years before the English release and in my
opinion was better due to the authenticity of the singing. I have no
problem with how her songs come across when she translates them to
English, but I feel that her Spanish sung versions are better. I don’t
know if this album will sell as good as the previous release here in the
US, but I can say that it Fijacion
Oral
just as good if not better. |

Seether
Karma and Effect
2005 Wind-Up Records
Grade: C
http://www.seether.com
Karma and Effect is the second
CD released by Seether, a Nirvana-ish sounding group who had seen some
moderate success with their debut CD
Disclaimer. The first single “Remedy,” has been getting plenty
of airplay on radio and TV and the band is currently on a tour of the
US. If you enjoyed Seethers’ first CD or like
Nirvana,
Breaking Benjamin and
The Exies I think you will
enjoy this new disc. I personally struggled to make it all the way
through the disc without skipping ahead to the next song. |

The Double Dose |
| The Double Dose this
time will actually feature three releases from one of my favorite bands of
all time, Melvins. Step up and
get yourself a double dose of Zao.
Zao
Liberate Te Ex Inferis
1999 Solid State Records
Grade: A
http://www.zaoonline.com
http://www.wickedland.com/zao
http://www.solidstaterecords.com
http://www.ferretstyle.com
This powerful release is a thought
provoking and riveting effort guaranteed to grip your mind and emotions by
these hard metal legends. Zao started out at a church camp when some friends
decided they wanted to play some music together. Original guitarist Brent
Deter went on to form the band
The Juliana Theory while most recently the groups original drummer and
longest active member Jesse Smith has left to help form the band
Gods. Zao has always experienced some hardships and turmoil, which have
led to the bands near break-up on many occasions. In fact before the bands
most current release
The Funeral of God the group was allegedly calling it quits. Instead
they had another shift of band members and signed on to a new record label
Ferret Records. Now back to the task at hand Liberate Te Ex Inferis
or Save Yourself From Hell is one of the best CDs ever recorded by a
band in the metalcore scene. There are poetic and dark lyrics painted over
blistering guitar riffs and pulsating drums. “Skin Like Winter,” “Savannah,”
“The Ghost Psalm” and “Autopsy” are all classic songs for this genre and Zao
as well.
Zao
(Self-Titled)
2001 Solid State Records
Grade: A
I think Zao was a little ticked off at some
people when they wrote and recorded this CD. “5 Year Winter” and
“Trashcanhands” are both very personal with the lyrics and the music is
pulverizing as well. The group branched out drastically with songs like
“Witchhunter” and “Alive is Dead” by showing a wide range of talent for
songwriting. I think those songs also proved that this band could write
‘normal’ music that would be utterly amazing, yet the chose to stick it out
in the underworld known as the metalcore and hardcore scenes.
(Self-Titled)
has the group bouncing all over the place musically and could
be considered their last good record with that line-up. It has some of the
bands most beautiful and chilling songs as well as some of the most brutal.
All in all this is a great album. I urge you to get it today.

Blast From The Past |
|
Let’s take a journey back
and check out Nazareth.
Nazareth
Hair of the Dog
1975 A&M Released on CD 1990
Grade: A
http://www.nazarethdirect.co.uk
This is a quality
rock-n-roll record. I think that Nazareth hit the nail on the head with this
1975 release. There is of course the title track “Hair of the Dog,” which
amazes me that it gets played on the oldies stations with it’s chorus, that
would easily garner a parental advisory sticker by today’s standards for
language. I have always wanted to hear a band try to pull of a remake of the
song “Whiskey Drinkin’ Woman” which has always been one of my favorites, but
to my knowledge no one ever has. “Beggars Day,” “ Changin’ Times” and “Miss
Misery” are all rock-n-roll classics and I am sure almost everyone has heard
the bands remake of “Love Hurts”.
Hair of the Dog is an exceptional display of raw blues-rock guitar,
gritty, soulful vocals and a very solid rhythm section. I recommend this CD
to anyone that likes good old-fashioned rock music.

HOTSPUR
3-song demo
2005 Unsigned
Grade: A
http://www.hotspurmusic.com
http://www.myspace.com/hotspur
HOTSPUR really have their act together when
it comes to constructing songs and promoting themselves. This 3-song demo
showcases the bands talent for songwriting and getting the most out of their
instruments. With catchy sing along songs that contain solid rump shaking
rhythms, suave guitars, epic keyboards and debonair vocal parts HOTSPUR
sounds like nothing out these days, while containing an brilliant of mix of
what inspires and influences them. I am eagerly anticipating what these guys
will come up with next, because these three songs aren’t enough… I need
more! Check them out now; I think you will really like this group.

nemo-dna
artacia
2005 Unsigned
Grade: A
http://www.myspace.com/nemo_dna
http://www.freewebs.com/nemo_dna_veil
This CD is perfect for people that
like experimentation in the genres of Industrial, Metal and Alternative
music. This is a project by Chris Murray in which he has written, recorded,
played and produced everything you hear. Let me tell you there is a lot to
hear on artacia. Imagine taking older
Ministry and throwing them in an incubator with
Godflesh and
and somehow
nemo_dan comes out of the test tube ready to rock the world. These 16 tracks
are for fans of those bands that tend to be on the heavier side of the
spectrum while embracing abnormalities as the norm. If you like any of the
bands that I mentioned above get a copy of artacia soon. I seriously
doubt you’ll be disappointed. I hate to do this, but I can’t pick a ‘best’
song on the disc; you’ll just have to get it and find out for yourself.
The Zero Points
The Zero Points
2005 Unsigned
Grade: A
http://www.purevolume.com/thezeropoints
http://www.myspace.com/thezeropoints
The Zero Points have a sweet rock
sound that is straightforward and appealing. This eight song CD is full of
melodic guitars and solid tempos covered with quality vocals that fit
snuggly into the music. “Single Parent Home,” “She’s Pretty,” “You’re Not
The One” and “Default Aggression” are good rocking songs. Picture a hybrid
version of
Sonic Youth meets
Creedence Clearwater Revival and
Uncle Tupelo at a honky-tonk bar
for an all out jam session and you’ll have an idea of what The Zero Points
are bringing to the fold. Nice sound + first-rate song writing= quality
rock-n-roll that you can tap your foot to. Check out the bands web pages for
free downloads and information on how to obtain the CD. I truly think it’ll
be worth your time.

7 Questions With... |
Disciple
Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?
A. I'm Kevin, and I am the vocalist of the band.
Q. How did you decide on Disciple for the name of the band?
A. We were really really young, and we knew it was kind of a "generic" name
for a Christian band, so we thought we would use it until we found something
better. Every time we tried to change our name it just never worked out so I
think God planned for us to use the name.
Q. What are you willing to share with us about the new self-titled album?
A. Well, every CD we always grow and change. This time was no exception. We
wanted to try new things as far as our vocals and some small things about
our guitar riffs, and the result was a little bit more of a mature sound
that is accessible to all audiences in my opinion.
Q. Who are some of your influences?
A. We all have so many influences from Christian and the mainstream so the
list is too long musically to even get into. But I think that is what makes
it so special is that you can't really nail it down to one thing.
Q. If you could be anyone in world history who would you be? Why?
A. Wow, great question. I have never really thought about that. C.S.
Lewis was a very deep thinker. I think it would have been pretty cool to be
inside that guy's head.
Q. What are you listening to these days?
A. I am a big praise and worship fan. I have liked the music that has come
out of the Lakewood Church the last few years. I also am very excited with
the new Spoken CD that will be out in a couple of months. It sounds so good.
As far as mainstream stuff, I am really impressed with Sevendust and
Papa Roach's last CD.
Q. Is there anything else you would like to share with us about the band?
A. This is a very exciting time for us. I would just hope that our fans
would pray for us during this time that God would keep us humble and use us
to the utmost of our ability. It's all for Him and we don't want to forget
that.
http://www.disciplerocks.com
Note: Check back next issue for a review of the new CD by Disciple.
AnaDies
Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?
A. Christy - Vocals
Jeff - Guitar, Backup Vocals
Todd - Guitar, Percussion, Backup Vocals
Talia - Keys, Acoustic Guitar, Backup Vocals
Tom - Bass, Backup Vocals
Isaac - Drums
Q. How did the name AnaDies come about?
A. The name AnaDies originated from the word anodize, for those who aren't
aware, it is a process that uses electricity to apply color to metal. When
the band was forming, we originally were going to rely heavily upon the
electronic aspect with synths/sequencing, which is where electronically
applying color to metal came into play. As the band came together, the music
evolved in a different direction, but the name stuck. Over the last couple
years the name has also evolved and taken on new meaning to all of us, but
we'll save those stories for another time.
Q. What would you like to tell us about your release Formamentum?
A. "Formamentum" in Latin means a doorway or an opening. Since this is our
debut album we thought it would be a fitting title. The music on the album
is a melting pot of all the influence and style that shapes our sound. The
album portrays the full range of our music from our softer side in "Burnt"
to a darker, more aggressive sound heard in "Watch". The album was
engineered by Dave Otero from Flatline Audio (Denver, CO) who is best know
for his work with Relapse Records artist Cephalic Carnage and Crash Records
artists Serberus, The Mandrake, and Throcult (all of you death metal/black
metal fans know who we're talking about!)
Q. Who are some of your influences both musically and non-musical?
A. Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Tool, Tori Amos, Acid Bath, System of a Down,
Cradle Of Filth, Opeth, A Perfect Circle, Felix Mendelssohn, Fryderyk
Chopin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Family, Friends, and Fans, to name a few.
Q. If you could be anyone in world history who would you be? Why?
A. We skipped that class in school.
Q. What are you listening to these days in your car/home stereo?
A. Nightwish, Leave's Eyes, Trivium, Lacuna Coil, System of a Down, Phoenix/Nebulin,
Mankind is Obsolete and everyone at Coded Radio. (Visit Coded Radio at
http://www.scrubradio.com on Friday
nights at 11p EST and tell DJ Mike that AnaDies and J Sohn sent you!)
Q. What is the one thing that the world needs to know about AnaDies?
A. We're Coming!
Check out AnaDies online at
http://www.anadies.com and
http://www.myspace.com/AnaDies
.
You can also purchase our latest CD "Formamentum" at the AnaDies Online
Store for the low price of $8 (that includes the shipping!)

just
Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?
A. (CR) I am Chad and I write the guitar for the band.
(JS) I’m Jason Shuman and I play drums and percussion.
(JP) I am the singer and I write all the lyrics for the band.
(WC) I’m Will, the manager of the band.
Q. How did you decide on the name just?
A. (CR) We just said it and we all liked it.
(JS) I didn’t and don’t know how it arose. Something to do with Chad and
John. It’s just that simple.
(JP) Well we could not decide on a name. There were a good 50 or more but
the three of us could not agree on one name. The word "just" was always used
in our conversation about the topic. Chad said, ‘why don't we just call our
selves "just"?’ We all laughed ‘cause it was simple and cool…. and is us.
(WC) I recently joined the band as the manager, so I wasn’t present for the
‘name’ conversation. The name works; it’s simple, poignant, sticks in the
mind, and allows me a great deal of flexibility when it comes to marketing.
Q. Who are some of your influences both musically and non-
musical?
A. (CR) The sauce "alcohol", coffee, Nate Mowery, Jeff Buckley
(JS) Danny Carey of Tool, John Bonham, and Aaron Sauers – all musical.
(JP) Musically I would have to say Rob Thomas, Ben Harper, Jonny Lang, Zakk
Wylde, and Adam Duritz. Too many to name them all
(JP) Non-musically: my Mom and Dad. The reason I started writing,
"Elizabeth". I can't name every one I would like to name, but one other is
Rich Troyer a good friend of mine.
(WC) Yikes. Sigur Ros, Serena Matthews, NMSO4, Arvo Part, Bright Eyes, The
Tragically Hip...and a lot folks that have come and gone in my life; EF and
DD.
Q. If you could be anyone in world history who would you be? Why?
A. (CR) Christopher Columbus. That speaks for itself.
(JS) Jackson Pollock – he took forever to get what he wanted and when he
achieved his reality, he still was humble.
(JP) There are little things about me that I would want to change, but I
would not want to be anyone other than who I am. For me to want to be
someone else would be to say that I’m not OK with the life that I have. I
just want to be the best ‘me’ that I can.
(WC) I kinda dig the skin in which I reside. I’m grateful for the
visionaries of the past as we all live in their world as we continually
create ours. Creativity is nothing but a variation on themes…
Q. What would you like to share with us about your EP Wednesday Sessions?
A. (CR) We decided to threw it together, to try and capture the raw more
live sound. I never really expected it to become an EP.
(JS) It is all us. We recorded it, mixed and mastered it with Will – took us
five months because we wanted it ‘right’. The EP is five tracks of our
differences in song styles. Most of the recordings were done on a Wednesday.
Raw sound is what we wanted to capture. It’s not commercially over produced
and I like that no bull$h*t just us.
(JP) All the songs on this EP are very heart felt by all 3 of us.
(WC) From my perspective, there’s a bit of heart and soul in it. When JP
states, ‘…very heart felt by all 3 of us.’, well, I’m going to add one me.
Q. What are you listening to in your home/car stereo these days?
A. (CR) Modest Mouse, Glassjaw, The White Stripes, Chevelle, and the
Deftones.
(JS) Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Tool, and all Pink Floyd and Cohen
stuff.
(JP) Well, can't name all of them. I don't really listen to the radio. In my
car with CDs I listen to everyone from Breaking Benjamin to Counting Crows,
Zakk Wylde, Matchbox Twenty, and Tim McGraw to Incubus, and many more on any
given day. Just depends on the mood that I’m in.
(WC) A lot of just, Floyd, Serena Matthews, Bright Eyes, Belle & Sebastian,
NIN, Portishead, Autumn’s Descent.
Q. Are there any plans for a tour or upcoming live performances?
A. (WC) Not only do we have a current tour schedule; we are in the process
of filling in some dates. They are generally announced via our mailing list
and site, although I haven’t yet updated the site (shame on me). We’re
looking to do a European tour as well…keep the eyes open for it!
Note: Be sure to check back in the next issue for the review of
Wednesday Sessions.
