This week at the movies
Peter’s Preview October 29, 2010
By Peter Veugelaers ©
There’s nothing quite like an old gringo story with this week’s release of Monsters, from the United Kingdom by a debutant feature director, Gareth Edwards. He also wrote. Sure, Mexico gets a hard time in some movies: it’s a dumping place, and corrupt, and where America gets the unwanted. Perhaps that’s why there is an alien quarantine zone there in this science fiction entry. Aliens in Mexico have been done before in The Arrival and a number of quasi-political statement films. Described as this year’s District 9, Monsters follows a Yank journalist into Mexican heartland to find his boss’s daughter. From what I can gather he’s not doing that for frat-boy laughs. The A-Team
DVD Review Bradley Copper as Face, for reasons which have everything to do with his acting ability, is squared off with an agent who used to be his girlfriend (Jessica Biel), but I wondered where he got the time between tours of duties. Her antagonism towards him makes for the first sign of tangible conflict and that after a lengthy opening…more
It would be funny if Clint Eastwood as Walt Kowalski on the cover of the DVD package of Gran Torino actually wore a white collar like a Catholic priest does. It just looks like there is one around his neck. A trick of the mind, perhaps, and I was duped by the shadow. What a priest he would be and it is nothing like Father O’Malley from Going My Way...more This week's pick in the wide releases is None. For the first time in a while, there is not a new release we can recommend this week in wide release. Take the time to catch up on some good movies on Netflix or DVD, but stay away from Saw 3D whatever you do Last Weeks Pick: Hereafter Hereafter is some of Clint Eastwoods best directorial work, plodding and slow at times, but in the end the exploration of the afterlife is as comforting as it is unsettling. To tide you over here is the trailer for something that actually looks good. The upcoming Skyline. |
The Ten Most Anticipated Movies of 2010
By Michael Larson © 2009
There
are three we think will be great, four that could go either way, and
three that we think will probably end up as crap. It's also very
early in the cycle so don't hold us to any of it. However, it is
very apparent in looking through next years movies that Hollywood is
officially out of ideas. Eight of these ten movies are either
sequels, old stories, or based on graphic novels. The good news?
There is an abundance of hotness coming to a screen near you in
2010...

Will Ferrell Comedies are cool, but kind-of silly
By Peter Veugelaers © 2009
Will
Ferrell is an inspirational comedian that could inspire audiences to
mimic his delivery of humor. He's that cool. He's got that sense
of desperation about life that's utterly charmingly hilarious.
But enough is enough. After a weekend of gorging on Will Ferrell
comedies it's kind-of-silly in retrospect but I'd be looking
forward to his latest, perhaps ... if you're in the mood. This year's Land of the Lost is supposed to be his next family film.
But were any of his grown-up comedies, where he played the
lead, any good?...more

TV Bites with Neena Louise
The 2009-2010 Eleventh Annual TV BiteMes
by Neena Louise
Neena is back with her look back at the TV year that was from her very
own slightly warped, but always hilarious point of view.
Worst Actress
Stana Katic, "Kate Beckett", Castle
(Katic continues to drag this show down in its second season. It's
too bad, too, because otherwise Castle
is a pretty good show.)
Best Actress
Jane Lynch, "Sue Sylvester", Glee
(Lynch's spot-on delivery of some of the funniest lines in
Glee repeatedly stole the
show.)
Most Overrated Female
Jane Lynch, "Sue Sylvester", Glee
(But, enough already....more
